Storage shelves from 1×4s, half-inch ply, and a box of screws — the design my father-in-law has been handing out for years, now parametric.
Every family has one project that gets passed around like a recipe. In mine it's these storage shelves. My father-in-law has been building them for decades — garage, basement, cold room — and when I finally asked how, the whole plan fit in one breath: four posts, some scraps, ply shelves, screws.
No jigs, no glue-ups, no joinery you'd need to practice first. A drill and a saw. What I didn't appreciate until I modeled it is how much quiet cleverness hides in that one breath.
The structure is made of scrap
Each post is a six-foot cut from an eight-foot 1×4. That leaves two feet of "waste" per board — and the design spends exactly that waste as its structure. The leftover gets chopped into 2-inch blocks, and those blocks are the standoffs every shelf rests on. The cut list eats the whole board.
A joint you can't get wrong
There's no dado, no mortise, nothing that punishes a wandering saw. A standoff gets two countersunk screws into a post — that's the whole joint. The shelf sits on top of the standoffs and screws down into them. Every fastener drives straight and square, and if you botch one, you back it out and try again two inches over.
The 2-inch block also answers a question most shelf designs dodge: where does the shelf's weight actually go? Here it goes through the standoff's face grain into two screws in shear — the strongest boring answer available.
It grows sideways
The part I find genuinely elegant: adding a second column of shelves doesn't take four more posts. It takes two. Neighboring columns share the pair between them — the shared posts just carry standoffs on both faces. Every column after the first is two posts, a stack of offcut blocks, and some ply.
